A Guide to Pay Per Click Advertising

If you want your website to rank in the top few search engine results in the fastest time possible, Pay Per Click is the best way to do it.

Pay Per Click – otherwise known as PPC advertising – comes at a price, but it is a price that you can control.  With the right strategy you can ensure your advert is seen in the sponsored links section that appears next to the free listings in the search engine results.

By choosing the right keywords and bidding on ones which have a lot less competition, you can make sure your Pay Per Click advert is seen by exactly the right people, and everyone who clicks through to your website will be very interested in what you have to say or offer them.

This method of advertising is also known as cost per click advertising, because you will only be charged for those occasions when someone actually does click on your advert to visit your site.  Your ad can be displayed thousands of times and it won’t cost you a thing until someone clicks on it.

It’s important to remember however that if you bid on the wrong keywords you could end up with very little to show for your money.  Consider what your website is all about and what kind of person you want to reach.  It often works better to choose a keyword phrase rather than a single word.  For example instead of using ‘vacation’ you might use the phrase ‘beach vacations in the US’.  Not only will there be less competition for this phrase, it also targets your audience much more accurately.  What’s more, the cost per click for this phrase will no doubt be a lot less than it would be for the word ‘vacation’.

There are other versions of the CPC advertising model that work just as well as those used on the search engines.  One of the most recent ones which is growing in popularity is In-Text Advertising.  This works in a similar way, but instead of your adverts being shown on the search engine results pages they are displayed on relevant websites and blogs instead.

If your website promotes beach vacations in the US, your advert will be linked in to the most appropriate text used in articles and on websites and blogs whose owners have signed up to be part of the scheme.  Again you will only pay for actual visitors that you receive, rather than paying for a certain number of impressions.

In short PPC advertising can really pay dividends if you approach it in the right way and set a firm budget before you begin.  If you stretch that budget as far as possible by selecting keywords with less competition, you’ll soon receive a steady stream of traffic that is very interested in what your site is all about.
