Short History of Targeted Ads on the Internet
In the beginning there was internet advertising.  Then things developed to the point where there was targeted advertising.  Now that we can see the benefits of the latter, it is difficult to see why anyone would still be paying for standard ads when targeted ones bring you targeted web site traffic as a result.

Targeted ads really came about along with the birth of Pay Per Click advertising , although it arguably took a little longer for the idea of targeted ads to really catch on in a big way.

As time has gone on it has become clear that people have gone deeper into this method of attracting targeted traffic to their websites.  While we used to think that the more traffic we could get to our sites the better, we now realize that it’s not the numbers that count – it’s the quality of that traffic that matters in the end.

Targeted ads have become big business in recent years, and it’s not just standard websites that can display them now either.  There are companies which specifically target bloggers to help advertisers promote their wares within actual posts as well as in content links included in their written copy.  These kinds of links have taken content targeted advertising to the next level, and targeted ads are now even smarter than they used to be.  It’s not just a case of a ‘sponsored link’ appearing in search results any more; that advertisement could pop up as a blog post, a recommendation or a boxed ad nowadays too.

But things could go a step too far if recent news isn’t adhered to.  It looks as though rules are going to be put in place to make sure that certain groups of people are targeted by specific ads tailored to their needs.  Minority groups and those with certain illnesses are good examples.

It’s obviously important not to zero in too much on the people you want to get in touch with, but there is no doubt that targeted visitors means targeted traffic, and that in turn means more money for the person advertising their business in the long run.
