A Short History on PPC Advertising

Pay Per Click advertising has a turbulent history which goes back over ten years.  Like many other things to do with the internet the initial idea was a good one, but it took several years before it reached the stage it is at today, and in fact it nearly crashed and burned altogether as a result of the click fraud which used to be prevalent in the early days.

PPC advertising
was always going to be a popular form of advertising though, because it gave advertisers some control over which people saw their adverts and how they created them in the first place.  This made many other forms of online advertising pale in comparison, such as banners and classified ads.  While these still had their place it was possible to spend money on these types of advert and not see a single response in exchange.

Cost per click advertising was different.  Your ad could be seen thousands of times by plenty of different people, but unless someone actually clicked on your advert you wouldn’t pay a cent for the privilege.  In truth, PPC advertising heralded a whole new age of cost effective online advertising which set the trend for many companies to provide similar services.

Ironically it was the birth of Google Adsense in 2003 rather than the AdWords PPC advertising they introduced some three years earlier that really made everything snowball.  Suddenly it wasn’t just about pay per click anymore – it was about getting those ads seen in the best places, with the help of countless webmasters and bloggers who wanted to be earning more money from their sites.

That meant the people who were using pay per click methods to draw new people to their websites were getting their ads displayed on other websites instead of just on the search engine results pages.  This gave them a multitude of places to find new customers in, and it has certainly worked well for those who are prepared to put the effort into creating worthwhile cost per click campaigns.

That is the true situation which must be borne in mind of course.  You get out of pay per click advertising what you put into it.  The idea is simple enough but you should always be prepared to do your homework to find the best keywords and phrases to use to get the results you want.

Pay per click is utilized in many different ad formats.  Kontera advertising network, for example, utilizes In Text ads along with the ppc advertising model to earn money for online publishers.

Pay per click advertising has developed into a much smarter model than it used to be in the early days.  Click fraud still happens, but it is on a much smaller scale than it used to be and the majority of people who do try it on are caught.  But for those who use the system to its fullest, it can only bring traffic, qualified customers and rewards.
